Beyond the account balance

A profit figure is an outcome, not a complete explanation. Two traders can earn the same return while taking very different levels of risk or following entirely different processes. A journal should help identify what actually happened.

Separate periods and accounts

A useful dashboard clearly distinguishes lifetime statistics from a selected date range. For traders with multiple accounts, account-specific views prevent accidental mixing of performance records.

Track process quality

Record the setup, planned risk, session, relevant market context, execution quality and whether the plan was followed. These observations make review more actionable than a simple win/loss label.

Find patterns carefully

Analyze sample sizes, streaks, expectancy, profit factor, session performance and worst drawdowns. Small samples can produce misleading conclusions.

Protect sensitive records

Trading records may include account identifiers, broker information and chart screenshots. Public case studies should use redacted screenshots or synthetic demonstration data.
